They talked abbot this at ISWC 2 weeks ago and it is already a product.

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 9, 1999-- BarPoint.com Inc. (OTC BB:BPNT) has
partnered with JP Systems' InfoBeam(TM) for the timely delivery of product
pricing, purchase and other information over wireless communications devices
in a service to debut this fall. Shoppers will soon use UPC barcodes that
appear on more than 100 million retail products to wirelessly access
comparative pricing and other consumer information while shopping in any
store.

This partnership allows mobile users to type or scan product UPC barcodes
into a handheld device to wirelessly access BarPoint.com. A patent-pending
search engine technology, BarPoint.com gives consumers instant access to
comparative pricing from on-line sources, as well as manufacturer's contact
information, links to purchase the item from e-commerce vendors, and more.
The 12-digit UPC code can be entered manually on standard Palm OS and
Windows CE(TM) PDAs, or can be scanned in hand-held devices such as the SPT
1500 manufactured by Symbol Technologies (NYSE:SBL - news). JP Systems'
InfoBeam(TM) software is provided for most popular handheld devices allowing
them to instantly access BarPoint's Internet-based server to receive this
product-specific information. The service is ideal for use in stores
offering to match competitors' prices.
