I haven't looked at the doc yet, but there were acoustic cups available
for my old Model 100 laptop, as well as for the Model 1 series of
computers.

Yes -- technically voltages, but yes. However, in the "olden days" it
was illegal to hook any equipment up to the phone system, so we
had to come up with creative ways to transmit data.
Luckily that changed, as we can now just plug into the RJ-11
jack in the wall.
But today, how many payphones have modular jacks? How many
have detatchable (by design) handsets? None, I would be willing
to bet. So, we need a way to interface to *those* devices, which are
available all over the world.
