Acoustic Couplers

Okay, apparently I'm the only one on the list that didn't know what an
acoustic coupler was, and tried to invent it. (heh)
However, although it appears there are several commercial versions available,
all of them were at least $100+, which is more than I'd care to spend. I
looked for schematics or something to make my own, but all I could find were
some Tandy support docs
(http://support.tandy.com/support_accessories/5690.htm). I am theorizing out
of my league here, but wouldn't you just have to hook a phone handset into
your modem? By the time the data leaves your modem, it's already in sound
form, isn't it?
I realize the possibilities for baud rates are small, but I'm only looking
for small document exchanges, not full blown web browsing capabilities...
