Sounds like I may have been looking in the wrong >places, (hope, hope :) If you live in the Washington, DC, San Francisco, or Seattle metro area, you might want to check out the Ricochet wireless modem (www.metricom.com or www.ricochet.net -- Metricom is the company, Ricochet the service). For around $40 a month, you get a modem (about 3 x 8 x .5 inches and about a pound or so including the battery -- smaller ones are available, but more expensive) and unlimited wireless IP service at about 19 kbps. Battery life is around 10 hours -- I've never managed to completely deplete mine. It's not actually an end-to-end digital system (I'm pretty sure it just sends analog modem noise over the radio link), but it does have a DB-9 plug hanging out of it, and it accepts AT commands. Coverage varies from place to place, obviously, but I've never had any problems with mine. I live in beautiful Reston, VA, and have had no problems using it out in the burbs, in dark corners of office buildings in Washington, and even in shopping malls. The only places I've had it completely go dead are in the Metro and in the area immediately surrounding the CIA in Langley. Go figure. Tino
