$99 TimeLine Computer

Hi, folks;

  I'm waiting for a reply from TimeLine, but here's what I know (Having
computer problems, I guess I get to replace a power supply fan again on
this machine...)

  Here goes: (Paraphrased answers, from memory, sorta "Fuzzy" answers,
as I have yet to talk to anyone at TimeLine who is IMHO a "Technician")

{Re-sending time note: NetScape 4.04 has been giving me fits, as near as
I can figure, one piece of SPAM I received and tried to forward to my
ISP was causing NetScape 4.04 to tell Trumpet WinSock to HANG UP [!?] on
this machine. I took the text body out, after I finally figured out the
probable cause of the problem, and somehow I can now send messages
outbound - I think what was happening is that the message body's 56 "+"
signs were causing a modem command attention (plus sign 3 times
repeated, right?) to mess with the modem... Moral of the story: If a
piece of SPAM hangs up Trumpet WinSock, give your ISP a quick summary of
the contents of the message, not the entire verbatim text! I first
tried to send these all on FRIDAY, ACK!}

 [Charles, please consider this rev. 0 mod 5]:

 "BURNING QUESTIONS":
        Does the on-board IDE controller support HD's over 527 Mb?
          If so, How, specifically?  {LBA, EDPT, ???}
*	Answer, so far: "Well, the guy that tested this using Win95,
*	didn't have any problem with a 1.6 Gb drive; No-one who bought
*	one, has complained due to having problems getting a HD to work
*	in these machines." NOT very specific, any owner know more than
*	this?
        What speed are the UARTs? {SCM web pages don't cover these
          chips, anymore.)
*	Answer, so far: "We think they're fast, no-one has complained,
*	we'll check & send you an e-mail Monday or Thursday."
        What are the power interface needs, voltage, current, etc.?
*	It runs off a 24V "Wall Wart" power lump, no idea what current
*	capability needed.
        Is EDO Ram compatible with this machine?
*	E-mail Monday or Thursday.
        Is the floppy cable standard? Is the Epson floppy drive
          (SMD-1140?) included, if not, how much to add one?
*	"No idea"; I'll hope to hear more on Monday...
        Is the PCMCIA Dock actually included, or not?
*	No. Interface, but no PCMCIA Sockets.

        Shipping: HUB is apparently required; Can they ship just
boards,
          or ship the entire mess to here & I pull the boards, or ???
*	The quantity for a price break is apparently on the order of 50
*	(Yep, Five Zero) units.

  The folks in the Seattle area (there're about 10 units probably
heading this way?) might be able to save a FEW dollars by mass ordering,
but not a whole lot; I think I will probably try to work together with
some of the others, to co-operate on "hacking" this machine into a
wearable. (Someone else suggested this, but I really LIKE the idea; I
share a house with my girlfriend, I could host the "workshop" here, or
we can
find some other place to work on these machines.)

 DEFINITELY:                      [8]
 PROBABLY:                        [11]
 MAYBE:                           [1]
 Remotely Possibly:               [0]
  So we have 20 maximum, unless lots more people are interested but
silent I guess I'll plan to buy either alone, or just with the Seattle
area folks?

  TimeLine is closed until Monday, so let's figure out any decisions as
we go (for all I know, we COULD have 50 more folks interested but not
knowing enough, YET, to decide; far be it from ME to try to predict the
future!)

  And remember, daylight savings on Sunday, for those afflicted <G>
{Well, NetScape made THAT part of my message a little useless!}
