In addition to the ISP services which make a point to have local POPs in lots of places, it's possible to get an 800-number dialup. Mindspring offers this, for one. It's not cheap (20 cents/minute), but can be cheaper than dialing to a POP long-distance. As for physically connecting to the line: I'm curious what you're doing that makes you willing to travel for several days just to get to a network connection but then unwilling to physically connect to a phone line when you get there?
