I think this is a plain old analog cellphone with an analog 14.4k modem 
attached to it.  AMPS means, I think, Advanced Mobile Phone Service, 
which is analog cellular.

It sounds GREAT.  Just what I need for my experiments this year.  Where 
did you see it advertised?  Got a part number?
