In my experience I have found that I do better if I use a very dim
white light at night so that I can see what I need to see.
I find that a red light really destroys the ability to see color
(important when reading a chart) and needs to be a lot brighter
to be able to see anything.

Bottom line, my night vision is affected the same by either a dim white
light or a red light bright enough to see.
