Chording keyboard

A question. How many keys are required for a reasonable chording
keyboard? I was looking at joystick/joypad devices last night at
Fry's, and there are nice flat joypads that could conceivably be
made into a chording keyboard...assuming they have enough buttons.

The pad fell under my thumb...4 potential "buttons" for the thumb.

On the Gravis pad there are 4 other distinct buttons...one for
each finger.

On another pad there are *8* other distinct buttons...2 rows of
4 buttons, perfectly arranged for a keyboard type of device.

It seems like these would make a good belt-mounted keyboard
candidates...if there are a sufficient number of buttons to
make them work.
