why not add a pcmcia adapter and use small flash cards? (can you tell I
like flash cards? :) Perhaps a bit pricey, but in the long run its a
hell of a lot lighter and more compact, and less power.

pcmcia pc/104 expansion < $300
2mb flash card < $50
pcmcia slot for desktop pc < $100

The only drawback I can see is that you can only exchange files with
your own pc.
