The higher speed Internet linked gateways are localized.  There
are some definite bright spots around the country where connectivity
exists that surpasses what is normally seen from ISP's.   That requires
a little extra effort in the equipment.  9600 is fairly easy.  56k is
do-able but not trivial.

It just so happens that Steve's now on the edge of the Puget Sound 
network.  (See http://wetnet.wa.com )   It should be interesting
working with him to get connected.
