Check the Olivetti & Oracle Research Labratory
(http://www.orl.co.uk/), in particular their Active Badge system 
(http://www.orl.co.uk/ab.html), although I think they have a couple
other related projects.  There was also an article in (I think) the
latest Linux Journal.

Finding locations for people at ORL over the web is cute, but I did
like the combination of that with their virtual network computer---you
walk up to a machine and it immediately displays your current session.
