You can put the NetWinder somewhere else like under a seat or in the boot,
and use a remote dash panel (see <http://www.mp3car.com/> for links to
where you can buy them from). For somewhat more effort (building power
supplies, wiring a seperate amp up, etc.) you have something which looks
just as good but costs less and has quite a bit more capability. The power
isn't that bad, considering you will mainly be using it when the engine is
running anyway, plus the main source of power consumption is the hard
drive, which the empeg also has.

I talked to Hugo about it, and he doesn't intend putting more than 4 on
unless specially requested to, so I don't think he would want to design a
new motherboard for someone who wants more than that (the memory is
soldered to the board, so you can't just plug a card in with more on it).
8 is more than enough for what the unit is designed to do, so it has been
limited to that amount to cut costs.

The Itsy already _has_ seen the light of day. They have built quite a few
of them and have had Linux running on it for quite a while (see
<http://www.research.digital.com/wrl/itsy/> for more details). As for the
PLEB, I sincerely hope to prove you wrong.

My point is that it's expensive for what it is and, by design, is not
versatile.
