Re: That was rather crude (Re: Lies Electronics)

I have friends with "invisible disabilities" (Seizure disorders,
cognitive "cross-wiring" (for lack of a better term), etc.)

They already have problems with store access, on frequent occasion,
with their Service Dogs (Like a guide dog, only custom trained due to
their having a different disability than low vision.) At the same time,
I'm building a wearcomp to go on the back of the girlfriend's electric
wheelchair, to act as a wireless networking hub to our PC110's, to start
off with (until we get a really good VGA HUD, her vision just won't let
her SEE anything on a camera viewfinder!) Should have 3 Gb of data,
max, available behind her (really neat for shopping.) And - with her
visual disabilities - she REALLY could use a vidcam connected to a HUD
as she doesn't have all that much long-range vision! She -will- have a
better "leg to stand on" (so to speak) for access to a store, as this
machine may end up with a Ricochet onboard & GPS added, so I can track
her as she roams about <G> (Biggest problem is keyboard, part of why
the Keydler's being done! Just too slowly.)

I have to agree, at the same time, with the challenges here to the
silly bogosity of the stores' usual arguments; when you think about it,
what business of a store's is it to choose FOR US, what we as free
citizens may & may not carry on our persons, to make our lives work?
(What we do with those things, sure - to some extent - No random
spraying of Mace in the produce section! And we're responsible for
damage we cause due to our choices, certainly.) But - How, exactly,
does taking a picture BACK of them taking a picture of me, reduce their
profitability in any way? (The function of a company is to make money
for the owner/stockholders; Not to be a surveilance entity, in the
psychotic belief that they have one-sided rights to perform
surveilance!  Companies are responsible for their actions, as well;
Good OR bad actions.) How does the ability to A/V record their lying to
customers, reduce their right to make a profit in a legal manner?

I don't ask permission to directly - or via camera - view the
combination of their safe (THAT is, rightfully, private, as public
knowledge of that could result in losses for the company! Nor do they
get access to my credit card, etc. without MY consent!)

But - The so common thought that I don't have the right to know their
prices is a (VERY stupid IMHO) common market-operator hallucination; I
see many web sites where they ask me to contact a salesman for pricing
(screw that, to be blunt; I don't expect an exact price, necessarily -
but I -do- expect a monthly rough price if I go look for some part, say
an ADXL202 or some such, to be findable, "about $22" would be fine - I
just need to know a ballpark figure, for design work!) I just don't
have time/$$$ to play phone tag with sales folks, much less argue with a
"salesperson" as to whether I need something or not! - and I find it
frustrating unless they're well-trained (ask "what're the power
requirements of this widget", and they should KNOW, or be able to find
out, or the data should be on the web, or available fax-back or
something, dangit! <G>)

I doubt any store has a "right" to separate citizens from their cell
phone, practically at least; I've had quite a few times when a cell
phone or radio (that in these cases was NOT at hand!) would have been
extremely handy (Seeing an accident when driving, as well as while
following a drunk who is driving ALL over the road - about 20+ times in
a mile, they almost went off the road to the left (expecting to see that
particular bozo crash at any second, ended up driving past a state
trooper & stopping & asking the WSP trooper to pull the driver over!))
IMHO in the future, Cell phones should start to be someday considered
part of first aid kits...

And for darn sure, I do use my PC110 for memory augmentation! (Nice
to carry all HD C/H/S settings for all major manufacturers with when I
go help someone on their computer!)
