I'm not real sure of what the state of the art is with scanners, but
does there exist a single scanner that could both read bar codes and
shelf tags.  In my area stores all have shelf tags listing the price of
the item along with the UPC code and a short description.  If this were
true everywhere, reading the shelf tag would help to simplify matters.
