Just because you have a lifetime of listening to people talk, does not mean you are used to hearing written language - there are differances. I use cheep, off the shelf stereo "open air" headphones which do a good job of augmenting rather than obscuring outside world sound. I remove or move them for social reasons, not aural ones. When you go to the store to buy headphones, put them on and don't play anything though them. That will give you an idea of how much sound they block. That being said, while driving I hook the system up throught the car casset deck so I am not driving with headphones on. Additionaly, for the first few years I removed one of the speakers
