I have a tripmate, and its not really a mod, its just a software difference,
a few seconds after it starts up it starts sending the word "ASTRAL" to the
serial port, and you have to respond back with the same thing, after that
it sends a NMEA data stream just like any other GPS. The big problem I have
with it (and the reason I will probably replace it with something else), is
that it seems to have a fairly cheesy reciever, if it doesnt have a clear
view of a large portion of the sky it doesnt work (i.e. I get *no* reception
at all indoors or downtown between tall buildings, when other GPS recievers
I have seen for not much more money get a lot better reception). One thing
I do like about the tripmate is that you can "seed" it with an approximation
of your position, which speeds up its signal acquisition time, the software
that Delorme supplies with it allows you to use either your last known
position, or general coordinates for your state, which can cut your
acquisition time from minutes to seconds...
