Linux/X on Timeline Computer

Has anyone successfully installed X on a timeline computer?  I am trying to
do so and am having problems with the video setup.  The screen goes black
and the machine locks as soon as X starts to initialize.

I'm trying to get Linux set up and hook the twiddler, modem, etc. up as sort
of a pre-wearable, so that by the time I get a system put together I have
the basic skills in Linux, Twiddling, etc. in place.

Right now I am trying to use RedHat 5 and XFree86.
