audio link- ham repeaters,walkie-talkies, etc

I have to work in several rooms so the infared wouldn't work. I tried the
recoton 900 mhz headphones, but they had an effective range of about 20 ft
when seperated by walls. I've been looking for some way to jack up
transmitter's power a little. I don't remember much about radio, but I
figure amplifying a signal should be a pretty simple radio-sHack. Also, I've
heard the term "repeater" being used by the hammers. I can only assume that
it is a system of picking up and amplifying signals from time to time, but
again I have no idea how to do this. Another possible solution would be a
walkie talkie, but I don't know of any that transmit stereo.

Yes, I know, most people reading this are thinking that I'm too picky about
the stereo, but I like my mp3s.
