> Speaking of which, does anyone out there know of a decent mp3 player for > linux? Check out http://www.mp3.com, follow the links and you should find a page of software for Linux. I'm currently using amp and mpg123 on my desktop (P133) running Redhat 4.2. You can get the source for both players off of that site, and should be able to compile trivially on a well-maintained linux box. Of course, you'll need to rebuild your kernel to support sound card [check the kernel HOWTO for details] The current version of amp (0.7.6c) seems to handle all mpeg files I have (mpg1-3), and all the nasty formats. It uses about 22-28% of my processor, and doesn't have playlist support. mpg123 (version .59o Feb '98) handles almost all the same files -- a few it doesn't like, especially ones I made through Win95. It uses slightly less processor time (18-25%), but hiccups more often. Has a little playlist support, random file play in a directory. Regardless, I would consider both of these stable, and will try to incorporate a sound card (The Sound Blaster 16 Crystal-MM) on my machine in the next few days/weeks. Each are happy running with other jobs, as I run X, netscape and a few emacs sessions and have mild (few hiccups with mpg123) to no (since I started using amp today) audio problems. Being the geek I am, I use crontab and a playlist as my alarm clock in the morning. Climbing out of bed and remembering root password to shut off music always guarantees that I'm awake ;-) Hope this helps, -Josh
