thanks for prompt and helpful reply.  I like the first option best.  Can 
you point this techo novice to manufacturers of (a) ethernet cards for CF 
or SD and (b) serial to ethernet adapters, without undue time spent on your 
part?
I have been following this board for some time.  I gathered from the 
archive an article by Doug Sutherland from 2001 entitled "Re Mobile 
Sensorium" that looked promising, but (a) I have been unable to contact him 
re further info and (b) maybe technology has moved on a bit in the last 
three years.   I want to feed a PDA in an ultralight aircraft with data 
from various instruments that generally output in serial RS232 - ranging 
from 9600 baud to 38,400 baud.  If I can put an ethernet line into the PDA 
directly on a card that would be good.   Are serial to ethernet adapters 
essentially devices that can draw their power from the data lines?  I 
presume also that they don't need any host operating system.
