Hi Mark,
I'll tell you more about the EPIA TC in a week or so when I've got it.
I don't expect it to be very power efficient though, my main concern is
speed and memory capacity, therefore I'll go for the EPIA TC with 600 MHz
VIA CPU to start with hooked up with a few 80 Gb ide drives and 1Gb of
RAM. I want to be able to run programming languages, encyclopedias etc.
With the batteries I have, I expect to be able to run it for a day at
least without recharge. If we, however, had very good reliable and cheap
wireless connections the actual servers could be put outside, like
http://globalservers.com/priority/slashdot2a.htm?link_id=4595789351&type=click
which is a more viable way in the long run. Mainly what I need to carry
then is enough computing power for mediated reality and data collection.
This kind of global servers could then be used in a fair way, using a
protocol (nowadays called something like global grid computing) which
allows anyone shared access to the computing power of these servers
(a la SETI, i.e. the computer cycles you are not using can be used by
someone else). The actual computing power we need very much depend on
what we actually want to do with the wearable. Many cases it's quite
easy tasks like taking notes, check to do lists, calenders etc, for
these purposes a Libretto (even though power hungry with today's
measures) or an Ipaq or Zaurus with Linux will do well. I'm very
much in this idea about mediated reality though, and this needs quite
a lot of power.
About the glasses I'll show you my solution within a couple of weeks,
it reminds about yours.
Best regards
Roland
