We are creating an end-to-end MED-R solution. The idea of mediated reality through wearable computing has existed in research laboratories for over 30 years. However, the expensive and often bulky hardware has prevented widespread adoption of these systems. The continued evolution of computer graphics hardware has created the opportunity for a new generation of Mediated Reality systems. Specifically, the fourth generation graphics cards emerging onto the market have a degree of programmability that suits them as Reality-Processing Units (RPUs) beyond just their use as GPUs (Graphics Processor Units).
We are currently prototyping real-time mediated reality systems implemented on fourth generation graphics hardware, leaving the CPU free for other tasks. Our prototypes are small, affordable and robust.
